Distraction-free writing

One more post about writing today.

For me, this idea of a distraction-free writing app — many of them have sprung up in the last couple years — is not just unappealing, but disastrous. Full-screen mode for my word processor? You might as well cut my fingers off! Same for Dr. Drang, and he nails it:

The type of writing I typically do—mostly for work, but also here—is loaded with facts. I am constantly referring to photographs, drawings, experimental test results, calculations, reports written by others, textbooks, journal articles, and so on. These are not distractions; they are essential to the writing process.
