Gone Girl review

“To pretend to be calm is to be calm, in a way.”

“Sleep is like a cat: it only comes to you if you ignore it.”

A couple of nice nuggety quotes I mined from Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn, which I just finished reading.

Gone girl not the sort of thing I usually read. Liked it. Didn’t love it. There was a lot of good prose to enjoy, clever turns of phrase, nice moments. An outrageous premise — which I can’t say anything about without a massive spoiler. But show me a thriller without an outrageous premise. It’s a genre of outrageous premises, like horror.

Spoiler ahoy! Reading the next paragraph will ruin the book.

I had more of a problem with the gender politics of it. Basically Amy was the nastiest possible feminist — a truly psycho bitch feminist, an extremely unflattering portrayal of a strong woman. That made me uneasy through the whole thing.

But I’m pretty capable of putting such reservations aside for the sake of a yarn, and I did.
